A man who was reportedly suicidal over the loss of several family members was killed during a struggle over a weapon after Bexar County deputies tried to help him Tuesday afternoon on the Northwest Side.
Family members called deputies twice to check on the 31-year-old man at a home in the 11000 block of Liberty Field, deputies said.
Sheriff Javier Salazar said deputies responding to the first call were not able to establish contact with the man.
In the second call, deputies were able to communicate with the man and were attempting “to get him mental health assistance,” Salazar said
“One of the deputies did an outstanding job of trying to bond with the gentleman,” Salazar said, having reviewed body camera footage of the incident.
A struggle began after the deputies attempted to stun the man because he refused to go with them, Salazar said. The man attempted to grab one of the deputies’ stun guns during the struggle that lasted more than a minute.
“A minute is a very long time to be struggling with somebody especially when you know that they’re armed,” Salazar said.
The man then went for a weapon on a holster on his hip, Salazar said. A deputy then grabbed the man’s weapon as the struggle continued.
Deputies tried stunning him several more times but they were not successful.
A deputy then pulled his own gun and shot the man twice, hitting him once in the upper torso, Salazar said.
He said three deputies were at the home for about 30 minutes, and included two deputies who had between 15 and 20 years on the force, and a deputy who is in training.
The deputies will be placed on administrative leave for some time, then…
