Synopsis
“The Good Half” takes audiences on an emotional journey as Renn Wheeland (Nick Jonas) is forced to confront his deepest fears following the death of his mother, Lily (Elisabeth Shue). The film unravels as Renn returns to Cleveland for the funeral, forging a new bond with fellow passenger Zoey (Alexandra Shipp) and healing an old one with his sister, Leigh (Brittany Snow). With support from his eager-to-connect father, Darren (Matt Walsh), a high school friend, and a hoarder priest, Renn navigates his past, his problems, his step-father (David Arquette), his grief, and his new reality.
Director’s Vision
Director Robert Schwartzman, known for his previous directorial endeavors, brings a deeply personal touch to “The Good Half.” Having lost his father to cancer at a young age, Schwartzman sought to explore grief and loss through a lens of authenticity and humor. He connected with writer Brett Ryland, who also experienced the loss of his mother to cancer, to craft a story that resonates with the confusion and multifaceted nature of grief. Schwartzman’s goal was to balance heart and comedy, creating a film that authentically portrays the complexities of family dynamics and the surreal experiences of loss.
